Tahini sauce is a staple vegan sauce that is not only yummy but also pretty nutritious. It has a bitter, nutty flavor with hints of citrus and tastes delicious on pretty much everything. It’s also a great condiment for vegans because it is loaded with calcium and protein. (Two things that everyone worries we’re not getting enough of!) Scroll down to learn how to make a great recipe for tahini sauce.
What is Tahini?
The first time you heard the name of this condiment was probably when you were having falafel. Although it’s true that tahini sauce and falafel make a great pair, it is not just “falafel sauce.”
Tahini is actually different than tahini sauce. To put it simply, tahini is just ground sesame seeds. It’s very bitter and nutty, but loaded with nutrients. To make a delicious sauce out of it, you’ll have to combine this sesame seed paste with some other ingredients.
Where to Buy Tahini
If this is the first time you are using tahini, you probably have no idea where to find it. Tahini will be in most grocery stores, you just have to keep an eye out for it in the international foods section. If you absolutely cannot find it, you can always order it on Amazon!
Tahini Sauce Ingredients
- tahini
- lemon juice
- olive oil
- water
- minced garlic
- salt

- fresh herbs (optional)
How to Make Tahini Sauce
With this tahini sauce recipe, you can make it in about 5–10 minutes. All you need is a small food processor and the required ingredients. Simply place all of the ingredients in the food processor and blend until smooth. Taste the sauce and adjust any of the seasonings to your liking.
Note: Before you measure your tahini, make sure you stir it well. The more solid portion of the tahini will fall to the bottom and the thin tahini will be at the top. You want to start with an evener consistency or else your sauce might end up watery or too thick.
