Are Gummy Vitamins Vegan?

If you’re trying to get more nutrients in your plant-based diet, multivitamin supplements may not be the best option if you have difficulty swallowing pills. And if you have children who are picky eaters, you might run into a similar problem.

If supplements aren’t for you, you might consider taking vegan gummy vitamins instead — a chewable supplement with a candy-like texture and flavor. These are much easier to eat and are much easier to get children to take!

However, like with gummy candies, many gummy vitamins are made with gelatin, which is not vegan-friendly. Gelatin is made by cooking collagen, and collagen is extracted from unpalatable parts of animals (like bones) when boiled. So, gelatin is definitely not for vegans.

Gelatin is not the only way to make gummy vitamins. By using other methods, there are plenty of brands of vegan multivitamin gummies to choose from! You can find these for adults, kids, men, women, and even prenatal gummy vitamins for pregnant women!

Although there are many different types of vitamins and supplements, this list is made up of only vegan chewable multivitamins. This list does not include gummy supplements for only one vitamin (like vitamin D or B12), and it does not include prenatal vitamins. However, many of these brands make more than one type of vitamin, so if you like a brand, just check out their website to see if they make the kind you’re looking for!

There is one problem with gummy multivitamins, however. (And not just the vegan kind.) Gummy vitamins almost always omit iron as a nutrient. This is probably for two reasons:

  1. Iron tends to have a strong flavor, so it is hard to incorporate it into a tasty, candylike gummy.
  2. Too much Iron is harmful, and because candylike gummies are tempting to children, kids may accidentally consume too many and have toxic levels of iron.

But if you want a chewable vegan supplement with iron, many of the listed brands have a separate gummy vitamin just for Iron so that you don’t confuse it with your multivitamin and you can keep it away from children.

All product ingredients are subject to change at any time. Be sure to read all packaging carefully before buying and consuming. Also, you should be sure to check with your physician or nutritionist before trying a new a vitamin supplement.
